In 2009, in Beijing, I accidentally damaged a canister of an exposed roll of film. I quickly bound it up with thick, dark tape and, after returning home in New York I put the damaged roll in my refrigerator for safe keeping. Fast forward ten years  and I discovered the film in a box at the back of the refrigerator. I got it developed. The results showed that yes, many of the frames had been affected by the damage to the canister, but the resulting images, also changed by aging ten years in cold storage, somehow now reflected my experience of Beijing in a way that was accidentally but accurately evocative. Beijing was then and is now a city that, with the rest of China, undergoing a great cultural upheaval. And in a way my arrival there was for me a kind of upheaval of its own.
